From the Editor - Service without a sale
There are many signs that things just aren’t what they used to be.
From the editor: A Hobbs Act violation in the State House?
Just as our teachers are on an on-going crusade against school bullying, Vermont’s minority political party is on a similar crusade, too. The Vermont GOP believes the state’s teachers’ union has played the bully in the “school” of state politics.
From the editor: Vermont’s legal bungee jumping
Vermont taxpayers just witnessed a multi-million dollar effort fail miserably in a U.S. District Court in Brattleboro Jan. 20.
From the Editor: Where did everybody go?
Back in kinder, gentler days when telephone prefixes incorporated quaint names, such as HEmlock 4-6523, a person could pick up a Bell Telephone-Western Electric rotary or Touch-Tone telephone and generally—perhaps with a little assistance from an operator or a receptionist—reach out and touch someone inside a business or public service agency.
From the editor: Caution, parent-driver on board
I’ve lived around school zones most of my life. I have seen school zones turn from quiet places at 10 a.m. to figurative combat zones at 8 a.m. and again at 2:30-3 p.m.—the dreaded parent/kiddie witching hours.
From the editor: Here’s to all the volunteers
Volunteering in our local community has its up and downsides.
Guest Viewpoint: Legislature needs to strengthen embezzlement laws
In recent years, there's been a significant increase in embezzlements in Vermont. Last year Auditor Tom Salmon created a ten member Vermont Municipal Advisory Committee to address embezzlement.
From the editor: Y2K12
MMXII, Y2K12. Happy New Year 2012. The new year of 2012 A.D., or C.E. if you prefer, will mark several interesting events.
From the editor: It’s Christmas time—in July

At a local meeting last month, Middlebury Select Board members heard a report summary presented by the Middlebury River Management Steering Committee.
Power to the people
It may have taken 752 days, but it was well worth the wait to cross the new Lake Champlain Bridge last week.
Guest Viewpoint: Vermont can't afford Green Mountain Care
I am the Rutland city treasurer and, since February of this year, I have used the financial skills I developed over a professional lifetime to evaluate the financial impact of Vermont’s planned transition to Green Mountain Care through the health care exchange beginning in 2014.
From the editor: Behind the college-loan bailout
President Obama came out last week to announce that he wants to help America’s in-debt college students. It’s essentially a college-loan bailout that’s no different than the various bailout schemes we’ve seen in recent years.
From the editor: World Series, seriously
Remembering the 1964 World Series
I am not an overly engaged sports fan, but the sport I have always liked best is Major League Baseball (and its Minor League farm-team system). Sorry, but football is a tad too rough for my civilized sensibilities; it looks too much like messy combat.
From the editor: Vermont’s real-estate prognosis-some good news
Nationwide, the residential real estate market remains flat if not bleak, but there are some regional areas where the patient seems to be slowly recovering. Here in Vermont, two such recovering patients appear to be Chittenden and Addison counties.
