— Teachers of the Rutland Southwest Supervisory Union agreed to allow a federal mediator step in to settle a record-breaking 637-day period without a contract.

Teachers attended a board meeting March 29 which went into executive session and ended up punting the impasse to the mediator.

The mediator selected was involved in settling the recent dispute in the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union in Fair Haven.

Teachers appeared pleased that a mediator was appointed but voted to authorize a strike if no agreement is reached.

If an agreement can't be reached by the morning of April 4, teachers will go on strike, according to an unidentified teacher at the March 29 meeting.

Schools affected are located in Middlebury Town Springs, Ira, Poultney, and Wells.
