Rotary Chili Cook-Off raises nearly $2,000 for Meals on Wheels

Club seeks benefactors for local events

— The Ludlow Rotary Club closed the books on the 21st Annual Chili Cook-Off, donating the bulk of the proceeds to the Black River Valley Senior Center.

Cook-Off Chairman Glenn Heitsmith handed over a check for $1,950 to BRVSC Executive Director Richard North at the June 26 Rotary luncheon.

The funds will go towards the center’s Meals on Wheels program, which delivers some 35 wholesome meals daily to senior citizens in Ludlow, Cavendish, Mount Holly and Plymouth, North said.

“We serve about 15,000 meals a year,” he said, adding that the food program constitutes the non-profit organization’s single biggest expense.

The Rotary Club Board of Directors also announced a change to its beneficiary selection process. After raising more than $40,000 for the BRVSC since 1990, the Ludlow Rotary Club has decided to open up the 2012 Chili Cook-Off and other select endeavors to the possibility of supporting different charities.

Non-profit groups are sought to partner with the Rotary Club to help raise funds. The club expects to name its new cook-off recipient by the end of August, well in time for the 22nd Annual Ludlow Rotary Chili Cook-Off Oct. 6.
