West Rutland The West Rutland High School girls' basketball team recently traveled to Chester to take on the Green Mountain Union High School with an unblemished, 5-0 record. However, they would head home with the first loss of the season, dropping a low-scoring, 34-30 loss to the Lady Chieftains at Nason Gym.
This one started out sluggish, as both teams committed several turnovers in the first few minutes, but a jumper from sophomore Madi Huntley and two free throws from senior McKala Benson gave the Lady Chiefs a 5-3 lead halfway through the quarter.
But after three consecutive GM turnovers derailed their momentum, a Morgan Raiche jumper and couple free throws from Golden Horde sophomore Kaelin Reopell tied things up with two minutes left in the quarter. After a few more turnovers form both teams, a lay up from G.M.’s Leslie Rogers gave the Chiefs a slim, 7-5 lead after one quarter.
Green Mountain would extend their lead in the second quarter, with a zone-defense that created a couple more turnovers which turned into baskets. After a Benson jumper and a a lay up from Huntley gave the Chiefs a five-point lead, G.M. coach Chris Wood called a time out after some more sloppy defense let West Rutland get back within two points after a bucket from sophomore Sarah Barker.
The Chiefs came right back and scored the next eight points , however, including a nice steal and lay up from Rogers for a three-point play and a 10-point lead heading into halftime. Morgan Raiche led the Golden Hourde at the break with 5 points, while Leslie Rodgers had five points for Green Mountain.
West Rutland would come out strong to start the second half, scoring eight straight points to pull with two points, before a Benson jumper stemmed the tide for the Lady Chiefs. After two free throws from West Side's Mikayla Dambrackas and then another Green Mountain turn over, the Chiefs called another time out with four minutes left in the third quarter.
