Letter to the Editor: Changes to the Transportation Board

— You may recall that the Vermont Bike/Ped Coalition strenuously objected to the way the Transportation Board was conducting its business and sent a public letter of complaint to the chairs of the House and Senate Transportation Committees.

T-Board administrator, Glenn Gershaneck will be replaced on an interim basis by Tom Viall who will serve until a permanent replacement is hired in the next couple of months.

Public hearings, which the T-Board is charged with holding on an annual basis, were not held in 2011.

T-Board Chair, Moe Germain, assures the VBPC that hearings will resume in 2012 and that sufficient notice will be provided. The VBPC will be watching closely to see if new leadership will result in positive changes in the T-Board's conduct.

VTrans has announced that Patti Coburn, an engineer by training, is the state's new Safe Routes to School Coordinator, a position formerly held by Aimee Pope.

On Feb. 1, VTrans will release the results of a study on the economic and environmental benefits of bicycling and walking in Vermont. Bike/ped advocates have long sought hard evidence regarding the dollars that these activities generate. The report's findings will be presented in a public meeting via Vermont Interactive Television. A video summary will be available in the spring.

Many VBPC supporters responded to last year's survey regarding bike parking changes needed at state buildings. The detailed survey results and the report (prepared for the legislature by the Department of Buildings and General Services) can be viewed on the VBPC home page...
