West Rutland — The West Rutland girls' soccer team came into their road match up against Bellows Falls Union High School with a 4-3 record and looking for increased momentum and momentum they got. Getting a double overtime goal from and grabbing a tough win over the Lady Terriers.
This was an evenly matched contest throughout, with both teams seemingly getting equal chances to take over on the scoreboard, but many near misses and momentum shifts later, it took double-overtime to decide it.
"We certainly played well enough to get the win," Bellows Falls coach John Broadley said after the win. "But we didn't finish well enough on our opportunities."
The first half was back-and-forth throughout, with each team getting several chances to put one in the back of the net. Lady Horde sophomores Samantha Lacz and Mikayla Dambrackas each got nice opportunities in the opening 10 minutes, but Lacz's shot went just wide of the right post and the latter forced Terrier keeper Enny Mustapha to make a lunging save towards the left post.
The Terriers came back with some good offensive pressure of their own, with leading scorer Sarah Dumont getting two nice chances in front, but one shot went wide and the other sailed over the cross bar. Corina Stack also got some pressure on the net, but senior keeper Amanda Harte made the save.
The momentum finally shifted West Rutland's way, however, when the sophomore Lacz took a shot that found the right inside post from 10 feet out, and the Golden Horde at a 1-0 lead at 20:01 of the fist half. Westside would get more pressure with two consecutive corner kicks, but couldn't get a shot on net with either.
Bellows Falls would bounce back again, this time making it pay off. After back-to-back corner kicks, Dumont took a rebound off the second corner, going down low to get it and planted a shot to the left corner and under the crossbar to tie the score at 8:43. The Terriers got two more good chances in the final two minutes, with the second opportunity going just wide of the left post at the buzzer.
