Omya’s ‘big pit’ will open to public

World’s largest open-pit marble mine in Middlebury

— It’s a perfect educational and rockhounding adventure for the family—a trip deep inside the largest open-pit marble mine in the world. The big pit is located off U.S. Route 7 in Middlebury. The quarry, owned by Swiss-owned Omya, will be open Saturday, Oct. 15, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. The open house is part of national Earth Science Week.

Buses will shuttle visitors from the surface to three activity “stations” in the quarry. Final bus tours into the quarry depart at 3 p.m.

Many earth science activities can be enjoyed before or after your tour. Learn more about Vermont’s geology through family activities including rock collecting, mineral testing, and a scavenger hunt. Artists of all ages can help create an earth science mural. Big trucks, drills, and mining equipment will be on display, and children may play in a pile of marble sand complete with toy trucks. Complimentary light refreshments will be served.

“Omya employees enjoy hosting hundreds of happy and appreciative visitors at the annual open house,” said Alice Blount, Omya mineralogist.

Omya’s Middlebury Quarry is located just east of Route 7, two miles south of Middlebury or one mile north of the Route 116 and Route 7 intersection to East Middlebury. Look for the signs and balloons indicating the turn (private road just north of Foster Motors) on the day of the event.
