In the past, Hinesburg has been known primarily for its soccer prowes Redhawks causes. Well, don't look now but the Champlain Valley Union High School (CVU) football team is creating an impact in Division I. And after a big home win against Brattleboro two weeks ago, the Redhawks stood at 4-0 heading into their biggest test yet of the season in BFA St.-Albans.
CVU ran into a buzz saw on Saturday, dropping a tough, 48-0 shallacking at the hands of the Bobwhites. St. Albans, who are now tied at 4-1 with CVU in the division, did what they have always been known for; pounding the ball on the ground behind a big offensive line.
From the get-go, as in the opening kick off, things did not go as planned for CVU, as they fumbled the first two kickoffs of the game, and the Bobwhites turned both take-aways into touchdowns and a 14-0 lead five minutes into the game. This would become the blueprint for the day, as BFA-St. Albans would dominate on the ground the entire game - as in - they never threw a single pass, because they didn’t need to.
The Bobwhites ran for a whopping 451 yards rushing, with eight different players getting a chance to run with the rock on the day. Sam Rose would lead the way with 177 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Doug Saffo would add another 123 yards and two more scores. One of Rose's TD runs went for 62 yards, and BFA quarterback Nick Jaslowich also threw a touchdown pass.
The rainy weather did not help the Redhawks cause, as quarterback Drew Nick threw for just 51 yards through the air and two interceptions. Nick Ferrentino led the way for the CVU running game with 61 yards, but that is not the way the Redhawks offense is designed to move the ball.
