Shumlin: Interstate-89 pileup is a "fact of life"

12-car pileup Dec. 28

— Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin told reporters in Montpelier Dec. 28 that a 12-car accident on Interstate 89 during the height of the snowstorm near Burlington represents "the facts of living in Vermont in winter."

Shumlin said he felt bad for the drivers and passengers involved in the pileup.

A portion of the highway, located between Waterbury and Richmond was closed between 3-8 p.m. The section of I-89 is believed to be among the worst stretches of highway in New England during winter storms.

It is uncertain what the state can do to improve safety conditions along the stretch of I-89. Many of the recorded accidents there are due to excessive speeding by drivers in poor weather conditions.
